'Communications Biology' publishes FFoQSI study
New publication by FFoQSI Area Leader Julian Weghuber & Team
11/2023 The working group led by Area Leader Julian Weghuber at the FFoQSI site in Wels publishes the latest findings on improving the bioactivity of plant-based active substances.
Many bioactive plant substances, so-called phytochemicals, have the potential to improve human and animal health. Unfortunately, chemical modifications of these substances, for example in the form of sugar residues, massively restrict their bioavailability and bioactivity. PhD students Alice König and Nadiia Sadova from Julian Weghuber's research group have developed a successful solution to this problem: A combination of acid hydrolysis and bacterial fermentation reduces the chemical modification and thus improves the effectiveness of the plant substances, in this case citrus flavonoids. The study was published in the journal "Communications Biology" under the title "Combined acid hydrolysis and fermentation improves bioactivity of citrus flavonoids in vitro and in vivo" (Nature-Springer Verlag) and can be accessed via the link provided:
